So I work in a progressive neuroscience research lab studying gender identity and sexual orientation, specifically, how they relate to various somatic markers and cognitive measures.
Our research is examining the prenatal androgen theory, so we are studying difference in measurements that are typically sexually dimorphic (ie: digit ratio, spatial ability, verbal fluency) and comparing these measurements taken for people of various gender identities and sexual orientations to see if there are any correlations.
The goal of our study is essentially queering science. We’re trying to get science to break down the rigid binary through which it has historically viewed our identities.
But onto this picture now…
So I decided to measure my own hands today. I literally have the most male-typical (smallest) digit ratio out of all 1163 hands our lab has measured so far.
HAHAHAHA I win? Yay for little boy-hands!
